Are you sure, God?

Date: Friday, August 1

Scripture: Acts 9:10-20

Verse: Ananias countered, “Lord, I have heard many reports about this man. People say he has done horrible things to your holy people in Jerusalem. He’s here with authority from the chief priests to arrest everyone who calls on your name.” (Acts 9:13-14)

I am afraid of heights, so I don’t see myself ever bungee jumping. But there have been times when I have been called upon to do things in spite of that fear. Like the mission trip when I was the adult with a group of 5 youth painting a 2 story house. I felt called upon to get the house painted, and called to model before the youth our commitment to serving Christ by serving the homeowner. So, I went higher up the ladder than I was comfortable. I was shaking and holding on for dear life, but it had to be done.

Can you imagine being Ananias and hearing God’s call to go to minister to a man who has been arresting people just like you? It’s nuts. Or think about what Moses heard at the burning bush — go to the most powerful man in the world and tell him to free all of his slaves because you and God say so. That’s crazy! Both Ananias and Moses ask God if he is sure this is the way he wants to proceed, but then they go. Each puts faith over fear.

Sometimes God calls us to do things outside of our comfort zone. Maybe it is to approach a neighbor whom you haven’t met, or to reach out to the one with whom your relationship is strained, or to volunteer with an organization you know is serving God by serving others but you’re worried about having the time. Let your faith lead you, rather than your fear.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, embolden me to serve you, even when I am uncomfortable or afraid. Amen.

Action: Be open to God’s leading of you outside of your comfort zone.
