Obey the word

Date: Monday, June 23

ScriptureJoshua 1:7-9

Verse: Never stop speaking about this Instruction scroll. Recite it day and night so you can carefully obey everything written in it. Then you will accomplish your objectives and you will succeed. (Joshua 1:8)

Do you follow the instructions, or figure it out as you go along?

Do you follow the instructions, or figure it out as you go?

Do you follow the instructions? Do you read them in their entirety before beginning work, as most tell you to do? Some people wait until they are utterly frustrated with failed attempts to figure it out on their own before looking at the instructions. Some good cooks somehow seem to just know what to add to make things delicious, until they are trying to make something complicated. Then they rely on a recipe. Today, most of our new phones, computers, tablets, and the like, don’t even come with a user manual. Which is OK for many of us because we wouldn’t read it anyway. We’d rather try to figure it out on our own.

While some of us just have a knack for assembling IKEA furniture, making dinner with out the directions, or knowing just how their new tablet works, this doesn’t work well in our spiritual journeys. Despite conventional wisdom that says we are free to assemble our own spirituality based on what works best for us, we find that kind of self-made faith rarely holds up.

That is why God instructs Joshua to follow to the letter what Moses has written down for him to do. As Moses’ successor, Joshua needs to know path, he needs to understand and follow the instructions to be the leader God has called him to be.

We have a book too. God has given us the Bible to strengthen our relationship with him, and we too need to “Recite it day and night so you can carefully obey everything written in it.” Getting to know the Bible is a great way to better understand the God we serve, and what he expects and wants from us. Find a translation you like, and start reading (Biblegateway.com is a great place to check out different versions), find a passage you’ve always wanted to know more about, and start reading. You may be surprised at how clearly God speaks to our hearts when we read the Bible.

Prayer: Thank you God for your Holy Word. Teach me your ways in and through it. Amen.

Action: Pick a book of the Bible to read this week. Then block out some time each day just for reading. Listen to what God is saying to you as you read.

Respond: When have you waited to follow the instructions, only to find something you thought was so complicated was really quite easy after reading the instructions?
