Scripture: Romans 15:22-33
Verse: so that by God’s will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company. (Romans 15:32)
I have sometimes joked about how good our congregation is at greeting one another. There have been Sundays when the lay reader has almost had to shout to get the attention of the congregation back up front after the greeting time. Other Sundays, our services start with a significant number of those who will be joining the service, still out in the Great Room catching up with other members – laughing, telling stories, caring for one another. Like Paul, we know what it is like to “come with joy and be refreshed” in the company of our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Paul had never been to Rome. Yet without the technology of Facebook, Skype, or even a simple phone call or even telegraph to deliver messages back and forth, he feels deeply connected to the Christians there. Certainly, he knew some of them personally, and others by their reputation, but I would guess the vast majority were strangers. Yet Paul talks about coming to see them as though he is returning to long-lost friends, confident he will be refreshed in their company.
Our faith journey is enriched not only through Bible study, prayer, or how many sermons we listen to. It is also strengthened as we connect with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Those interactions have the ability to bring us joy, to refresh us, to strengthen us to continue. Let us remember to be that source of encouragement, joy, and strength for one another.
Prayer: Thank you, O God, for putting people in my life who bring joy and refreshment to my life. Amen.
Action: Spend some extra time this week being with people who bring you joy.
