Looking back, moving forward

Date: Thursday, January 2

ScriptureMalachi 4:1-6

Verse: But for you who revere my name the sun of righteousness shall rise, with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. (Malachi 4:2)

As my home church was preparing to celebrate their 150th anniversary, a call went out for people to submit ideas for a name of this celebratory year. My mom submitted the winning entry, “Looking Back – Moving Forward.” What a great theme, not only for an anniversary year, but for all churches with a proud history. Sometimes it is quite easy to get stuck in the past. Churches often get stuck longing for the “good ol’ days.” But it is not only churches. Many individuals can get stuck in a similar mindset.

When I read this passage from the prophet Malachi, my home church’s anniversary theme, “Looking Back – Moving Forward,” come to mind. There is this sense of movement the day of the Lord will bring. While rooted in the past, something new will be dawning, a day when God will make everything right.

On this second day of 2014, as some of us are returning to work and we are preparing for the routine to return after the holidays, this is a good reminder for us to remember what is behind us, but not to get stuck there. As it is when we are driving, if we focus too long on the rearview mirror we will lose track of where we are going.

Prayer: Holy Spirit move in my heart that I might not rest of past accomplishments, but will hear your call toward what lies ahead. Amen.

Action: Reflect on how you will hold the balance between remembering the past and staying focused on the future.
