Date: Merry Christmas!
Scripture: Matthew 1:18-25
Verse: “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.” (Matthew 1:23)
My all-time favorite Christmas movie is A Christmas Story, little Ralphie’s Christmas where all he wants is a Red Rider BB gun with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time. Throughout the movie he tries every trick he can to let his mom and dad, his teacher, and even Santa know about this Christmas wish. He hides an ad in his mom’s magazine, tries to be good (but is often unsuccessful), writes a brilliant essay for his school, gives not-so-subtle hints, and whatever else he can think of to get his BB gun.
Sometimes we picture our relationship with God like Ralphie and the BB gun. We treat it as a great treasure we have to go searching for, trying to be good enough, hoping we do the right things, but in the end never sure we’ve done enough.
In today’s reading one word, Emmanuel, tells a different story. That one word tells us what Christmas is all about – God is with us. It is as if in all of our seeking, God is standing right in front of us, waving his arms, and shouting, “Here I am. Right here!”
Among the wrapping paper and bows, as you celebrate with family and friends today, in the car as you travel from house to house – God is with you. And not just today, but tomorrow as well, and into the new year – God is with us. Everywhere we go, God is here! He is with us! God has come! This we need to celebrate today!
God is here! Merry Christmas!
