Give Thanks!

Date: Thursday, November 28 – HAPPY THANKSGIVING

ScripturePsalm 111

Verse: Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. (Psalm 111:1)

Today can be a very busy day. You may be getting up early to put the turkey in the oven, or getting ready to travel to a friend’s house to enjoy a meal, or maybe you are far from home to visit extended family. How good it is, in the midst of all that needs to be done, to take a moment to read this devotion and offer a prayer of thanksgiving. This is an important day, and an important thing we do when we pause to remember all God has given us and to say thank you.

Today I borrow these words from Meister Eckhart, a 13th century theologian of whom I know little else about, “If the only prayer you said was thank you, that would be enough.” He was onto something. Thank you reminds us of God’s provision in the past and in the future. Thank you signals our dependence on God, and our recognition of his grace in our lives. Thank you keeps us humble and gives us a heart to serve. Saying thank you is a powerful prayer.

Today is a wonderful day to do just that.

Prayer: Thank you. Amen.

Action: Keep an attitude of thanksgiving throughout the day ahead, whispering prayers of thanks often.

Respond: For what are you giving thanks today? Answer by clicking “Leave a Comment” below.
