Scripture: Luke 22:14-20
Verse: Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:19)
Humility, which we have been focused on this week, is the act of seeing ourselves realistically. When we are truly humble, as opposed to false humility, we begin to embrace our own brokenness. We see not just the good, but also the sinful parts of ourselves. We recognize we are not better than the people around us. Our money, brains, and even our faith do not elevate us to a new status above others. We are one of many, part of the human family, willing to serve rather than waiting to be served.
Jesus displays ultimate humility in going to the cross. He did not see being one with God “as something to be exploited” for his own gain, but instead “emptied himself, taking the form of a slave…he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross” (Philippians 2:4-11). In humility he allowed himself to be broken, he accepted it, embraced it. I believe he calls us to do the same. And when our brokenness meets his brokenness, healing occurs.
Tomorrow, as you come forward for communion (or the next time you receive), reclaim your brokenness. Come, not as one who deserves to receive, but as one who knows this is a gift to the undeserving. Come like the woman who knew she needed help from the judge, the tax collector who prayed for mercy, the child of no status surprised to be received. Come, not trusting in what you have done or what you have, but trusting instead in the brokenness of Christ offered to bring healing to your brokenness.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for being humble enough to go to the cross for my sake. May I now be humble enough to embrace my brokenness, and find healing. Amen.
