God’s Scandalous Love

Date: Monday, December 10

Scripture: Philippians 2:1-11

Verse: [He] emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross. -Philippians 2:7-8

“Jesus loves you!” We’ve seen the bumper stickers, the smiley-face shirts, and sang about it as kids in Sunday school. We know the line well, but many people’s predominant image of God is as one waiting to zap us when we get out of line. We see God as the cosmic cop or angry parent we need to appease to keep from getting punished. This is not the God of the Bible. God is not just trying to keep people in line. He is loving us with a love so great it is difficult to describe.

God did not stay far from us, wholly other than us in a far away land, waiting for us to find our way to him. Instead, God came in the person of Jesus who emptied himself to live and die among us. He showed us God’s love as he fed the hunger, healed the sick, and ate with sinners. He taught us to forgive as God forgives, and showed us through parables, how God longs to find those who are lost.

This week we are going to look at God’s scandalous love for you and for me. Jesus loves YOU. It may surprise you to find out just how loved you are.

Prayer: O loving God, help me to see myself through your eyes. Help me to love myself so I may love others better. Amen.

Action: Read this passage again taking special not of all Jesus has done and given up to show his love for you.
