With Thanksgiving

Date: Thursday, November 22 – Happy Thanksgiving!

Scripture: Philippians 4:4-9

Verse: Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. – Philippians 4:6

Our ability to give thanks has much to do with what we choose to focus upon. Too often we focus on our lack – what we need, what we want, what we wish for. Those thoughts can be quite depressing. A friend recently posted in his blog many of what he calls our “not enoughs” – There is not enough money in my bank account to be comfortable, not enough jobs in the economy, not enough good things on TV, not enough food for all the hungry, not enough time to get everything done… (Thanks to Greg. Read his blog here). When we are stuck in the “not enoughs,” it is difficult to give thanks.

In this passage, Paul draws our attention elsewhere. He calls the Philippians and us to focus not on our lack, but on what we have. He tells them to look upon the true, honorable, just, pure, pleasing, commendable, excellent, and worthy of praise. When we choose to focus our thoughts there, our not enoughs are crowded out by our ability to “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice” (vs 4).

Beginning today, let us cultivate a focus away from the “not enoughs” toward the abundance in our lives of the true, honorable, just, pure, pleasing, commendable, excellent, and worthy of praise. May we live lives of thanksgiving every day.

Prayer: Thank you God for all with which I am so richly blessed. Amen.

Action: Set today aside to be a day of giving thanks to God!
