Freedom to serve

Date: Saturday, October 27

Scripture: Romans 8:12-17

Verse: “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.” (Romans 8:14)

Freedom is a value we highly esteem. We long to be free. As children we can hardly wait for the day we get our driver’s license and don’t have to wait for mom and dad to take us where we want to go. A couple of years later, we are again excited to leave for college, to move out of our parents’ house, to strike out on our own. Some of us have been in places where we long to get out of a job we find unfulfilling, or a relationship we find suffocating. We long to be free.

Many, when they achieve their freedom, find themselves wondering, “Now what?” They had spent so much of their time focusing on what they were longing to be free from, they never gave much thought to what they were freed for.

In this passage from Romans, Paul reminds the church they have been freed from the flesh – his word for our sinful desires – but we have also been freed to be children of God. We are not simply out there on our own, instead we have been adopted into God’s family.

Prayer: Thank you God for freeing me to be part of your family. Amen.

Action: Consider the gifts and abilities God has given you to use for his kingdom in your freedom in Christ.

And join with your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ at Tri-Lakes United Methodist Church tomorrow as Pastor Bob preaches on our new life in Jesus. His sermon, “The Promise of New Life” is based on Ephesians 1:3-14. Join us at 8:30, 9:45, or 11:00am.
