A great investment

Date: Saturday, October 13

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 9:6-15

Verse: “God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)

Over the years I have met several who have put everything they have into their businesses. Restaurant owners, tax accountants, shop owners, and the like, invest huge amounts of time, energy, and money to make their businesses flourish. I have known others who put every extra dollar and free moment into restoring a classic car or renovating a house. Every parent knows what it is like to give sacrificially for the benefit of his or her children. When we give toward something we believe in, while it may be difficult at times, we are glad to do it because we know we are building something meaningful, something important.

In today’s scripture, the Apostle Paul is telling us to think similarly when we give to the church. We are not just giving to give – to meet some mark, to keep God happy, to fulfill some arbitrary command. No! We are investing in the Kingdom of God.

How gratifying it is to know that we are giving our time, energy, and money toward making a real difference in the world. We are part of the redemptive work of Jesus Christ for his world. We are investing in what we pray for – for the Kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven. When we give for that reason, while it may not always be easy, we give cheerfully!

Prayer: May my giving, O God, be used to build up your kingdom in this community and across the globe. Amen.
